Firefighter of the Year

2009: Allen Johnson

This year’s firefighter of the year was awarded to Captain Allen Johnson.  Captain Johnson has been serving the citizens of Lawrence and Douglas County for over 35 years. On September 1, 1974 Allen Johnson was hired as a firefighter for the Lawrence Fire Department, was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1984, and is currently assigned to Station No. 3.

Captain Johnson participates in the Department’s Health and Safety Project Team, Awards Project Team, History Project Team and has been instrumental in the instruction of the 2009 Basic Recruit Class.  In 2008, Captain Johnson assisted with the organization of our Department’s Retired Firefighters Breakfast, where we invite our retired firefighters back on a quarterly basis, serve them breakfast and reminisce about old times. Over the years, Captain Johnson has been assigned as a shift training officer, manager over confined space, trench rescue, structural collapse and water rescue, acting shift commander and has twice been the lead instructor for our department’s basic recruit classes.  Captain Johnson has been an integral part of our Department’s recruiting efforts and actively seeks qualified applicants to enhance the diversity of our Department.

A very unique quality of Captain Johnson is that with 35 plus years of experience, he still brings the enthusiasm and work ethic of a new recruit firefighter. Captain Johnson’s love for the job is reflected in his ability to coach/teach the rookie or veteran firefighter.  Captain Johnson often treats incidents as a training session and each inspection as a classroom, believing there is always something to be learned from every incident.

Captain Johnson works tirelessly preparing his crew, increasing their ability and confidence to complete the mission of our Department.  He is routinely seen going above and beyond with his crew’s training by participating in additional drill field time, in house evolutions, and table tops, etc.  Captain Johnson does an outstanding job teaching at any level, whether it is with his crew, shift, or department as a whole.

Congratulations to Captain Allen Johnson from all of us at Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical!
